Eutrophication disrupts summer trophic links in an estuarine microbial food web ArchiMer
López-abbate, M.c.; Molinero, Juan-carlos; Barría De Cao, M.s.; Silva, R.; Negri, R.; Guinder, V.a.; Hozbor, M.c.; Hoffmeyer, M.s..
Eutrophication is the most widespread effect of urban development in coastal areas. To elucidate how nutrient loading affects the carbon pathways at the base of food chains, we quantified the carbon transfer among microbial components, from prokaryotes to microzooplankton. For this purpose, we performed two size-fractionation feeding experiments during late summer under moderate (N: 28.5 μM, P: 0.92 μM, Si: 45.8 μM) and severe (N: 173.9 μM, P: 3.5 μM, Si: 67.2 μM) cultural eutrophication in the Bahía Blanca Estuary (Argentina). In both experiments, prokaryotes were largely dominated by heterotrophic forms, small diatoms dominated among autotrophs, and heterotrophic nanoflagellates were the most abundant among protistan grazers. Under severe eutrophication,...

Loricate Choanoflagellates from the South Atlantic coastal zone (~32 °S) including the description of Diplotheca tricyclica sp. nov. Biota Neotropica
Bergesch,Marli; Odebrecht,Clarisse; Moestrup,Øjvind.
The biodiversity of marine heterotrophic protists is poorly known in the South Atlantic coastal zone (~32 °S) especially regarding the nanoflagellates. The presence of loricate choanoflagellates was reported for the first time in the Patos Lagoon estuary and the adjacent coastal zone. Seventeen species of eleven genera of loricate choanoflagellates were observed between October 1998 and May 2000 in fixed water samples (lugol's solution + glutaraldehyde) in a JEM 100-SX transmission electron microscope. Most species were recorded in euhaline and mixopolyhaline waters during the spring and summer, none in autumn and a few (four) in winter. The absence of choanoflagellates at the more sheltered inshore stations is due freshwater influence, and at the beach...

Microbial community structure in the sea surface microlayer at two contrasting coastal sites in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Joux, Fabien; Agogue, Helene; Obernosterer, Ingrid; Dupuy, Christine; Reinthaler, Thomas; Herndl, Gerhard J.; Lebaron, Philippe.
In an attempt to compare the microbial community structure between the sea surface microlayer (SML) and subsurface waters (SSW), we determined the enrichment factors (EF: the ratio of abundance or activity in the SML to abundance or activity in SSW) of 13 biological parameters. Samples were taken at 2 contrasting coastal sites in the Mediterranean Sea, corresponding to a high (Barcelona, Spain) and low (Banyuls-sur-Mer, France) urbanized area. Principal component analysis showed that temporal variability was much higher at Barcelona than at Banyuls, and that the characteristics of the SML and SSW samples were more closely related at Barcelona. At both sites, the SML was weakly enriched in heterotrophic bacteria (on average 1.1-fold), Synechococcus spp. (on...

Protozoans bacterivory in a subtropical environment during a dry/cold and a rainy/warm season BJM
Hisatugo,Karina F.; Mansano,Adrislaine S.; Seleghim,Mirna H.R..
In aquatic ecosystems, bacteria are controlled by several organisms in the food chain, such as protozoa, that use them as food source. This study aimed to quantify the ingestion and clearance rates of bacteria by ciliates and heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNF) in a subtropical freshwater reservoir (Monjolinho reservoir -São Carlos -Brazil) during one year period, in order to verify their importance as consumers and controllers of bacteria in two seasons, a dry/cold and a rainy/warm one. For this purpose, in situ bacterivory experiments were carried out bimonthly using fluorescently labeled bacteria with 5-(4,6 diclorotriazin-2yl) aminofluorescein (DTAF). Although ciliates have shown the highest individual ingestion and clearance rates, bacterivory was...
